Why I Go To Church

dianedp said...

Might I ask, why you chose the Greek Orthodox church?

I am curious. I left the Catholic church after 56 years.
It has been over a year and I cannot choose a new faith community.
How did you choose and why?
If it is not too personal a question.

Hi Dianepd, There is no short answer. But if you read my book Patience With God-- Faith for People who Don't Like Religion (or Atheism)you'll have my thinking such as it is on the subject. I like the local community. I like old liturgies. I like the monastic tradition. And while there are crazy right wing conservative "Orthodox" aplenty there is also a thread of mystical and open spirituality that goes back to the desert fathers I plug into. But I don't look at any church as "the" place to find salvation. I just look at it as a place to find community and spirituality. Email me at frankschaeffer.com if I may be of help. Best, Frank
